Adult Day Care Programs

Adult Day Care Centers are designed to provide care and companionship for seniors who need assistance or supervision during the day. The centers provide a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services for adults in a community based atmosphere. The adult day care program offers relief to family members or caregivers and allows them the freedom to go to work, handle personal business or just relax while knowing their relative is well cared for and safe. Adult day care centers also afford caregivers some time away from the demanding responsibilities of caregiving.

There are three types of adult day care centers. Social, medical/health, and specialized. The social provides interaction with others, social activities, meals, recreation and some health related services. The medical/health provides social services as well as a more intensive health and therapeutic services. Specialized adult day care centers focus on individuals with developmental disabilities.

Adult day care centers normally operate during normal business hours, five days a week. Some programs may offer services during the week-end. Seniors who need assistance to function independently in the community, but still need to be supervised in a living situation, would benefit in an adult day care program.

Although each adult day care center may differ in terms of features, these general services are offered by most facilities:

  • Safe and secure atmosphere
  • Personal care, help with toiletries, shampooing, shaving or bathing.
  • Nutritious meals, snacks, or special dietary needs.
  • Transportation.
  • Physical, speech, occupational group therapies.
  • Social Activities.
  • Assistance with eating or taking medications

Sometimes the level or type of care an individual needs can fluctuate frequently or change. Many adult day care centers are equipped to provide the necessary change without having your loved one sent to another center. If you know of someone that can benefit in an adult day care center, forward this information to their respected caregiver.
