Hormones play a critical role in a person’s overall mental and physical health. Hormones travel the blood stream sending messages to organs and tissues that tell the body how to operate.

Hormone imbalances can occur due to a variety of factors such as:

  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Poor diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Surgery
  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy

People who suffer from hormonal imbalances can experience a wide range of symptoms from minor fatigue to fibromyalgia. A common misconception is that hormonal fluctuations occur only during menopause. Hormonal imbalances can occur to women at any age and should be checked by a health care provider.


Fatigue can be caused by the adrenal gland not releasing enough hormones such as epinephrine. People who suffer from constant fatigue should be checked for hormonal imbalance by their physician.


Some women experience acne as a result of increasing testosterone that causes the body to produce extra oil. All women have testosterone in their body about 1/10 the amount of adult males. Many women report breakouts about a week before their period. It is not completely known why this occurs but is apparent that changes in hormone levels play a role.

Weight gain    

Increased hormones in the body such as cortisol contribute to a variety of health problems including weight gain. Cortisol is known as the “stress hormone” because it is released by the body during times of stress. It has positive effects on the body such as heightened senses, increased energy, and a lower sensitivity to pain.

People who are exposed to high stress levels get too much cortisol in their bloodstream which results in insulin resistance and slower metabolism making it difficult to lose weight.


When endocrine glands such as the thyroid stop working properly they can cause hormonal imbalances that lead to depression. It is not fully understood why thyroid malfunction causes depression but has been linked in several medical studies. Doctors can perform a series of blood tests to determine if the thyroid is not working properly.

Low libido

Hormones such as estrogen and testosterone can be thrown off by birth control pills, smoking, drinking, poor diet and lack of exercise. Low levels of testosterone are a main cause for a decrease in sexual desire or a low libido.
