Donating Your Sperm

Who Can Donate Sperm?

Each sperm center different variables and requirements about how can donate. In general, you must be between 18 years and 40 years of age, mentally and physically healthy and have excellent sperm qualities.

A sperm center is also called a sperm bank.

What Happens to the Sperm?

The sperm is usually used for in vitro fertilization and intrauterine insemination.

Types of Sperm Donors

There are two types of sperm donors: anonymous and known. Anonymous donors are usually individuals who donate their sperm at a sperm bank and are unaware of what happens to their sperm. The sperm donor does not know if children are conceived with their sperm. Known donors often donate their sperm to friends and family members to aid them in conceiving a child.

Anonymous Sperm Donor Process

For those who wish to donate their sperm to a sperm bank, they must follow a general procedure. First the sperm donor must contact the sperm bank, relay his intention to donate sperm and fill out paperwork relating to his medical history as well as his general background information. The next step is to undergo a physical examination to ensure that the male is healthy and that his sperm is fertile.

If the prospective sperm donor is a good match and meets all of the requirements of the sperm bank facility, they will ask him to donate his sperm. Sperm is usually donated, frequently at various stages over a specified period of time. The donation will be performed on site at the facility where the man will go to a private room and often be supplied with certain tools to aid him in providing a sperm sample. Most sperm banks will pay the donor a specified amount of money to donate their sperm. Many individuals donate sperm because of the monetary compensation.

Known Sperm Donor Process

The process for known sperm donors, is similar to that of the anonymous sperm donor. However, with this type of sperm donation the donation process often takes place within the office of the fertility doctor who is treating the infertile couple. The procedure will vary from case to case but the donor will undergo an extensive physical examination similar to that of the anonymous donor to ensure that he is healthy and fertile.

Why do Men Become Sperm Donors?

Some men donate their sperm for the monetary compensation. Some men donate sperm to aid others in conceiving a child.
