Save Money by Cooking

We eat a lot of canned goods. I cook salmon in the can and I always add my own ingredients, it's a meal!

Cook larger meals and freeze the leftovers. Less energy used and cheaper shopping.

I make my own lunch instead of eating out during lunchtime at work. It saves me a lot of money and I eat healthier.

I make slow cooker meals with lots of canned veggies. It stretches the meal and I always have enough left to freeze for dinner later on in the month.

Have a romantic candle light dinner at home instead of spending money at a restaurant.

I plan weekly meals around whatever the local grocery store has on sale, and what I have coupons for.

I have used a coffee filter more than once and it saves a little money.

Challenge your family to not eat out for a month. We saved lots of money!

Cut your own vegetables and grate your own cheese.

Prepare soup from scratch.

I get as many meals out of something as possible. Example: if I make a whole chicken in the crockpot, I save the stock, and take whatever chicken is left, and freeze it to make soup.

Use pots that fit the size of the burners on your stove. Use lids so you can cook at a lower temperature.

When cooking a large meal, after cooking, I immediately freeze half for another night's meal.  Two meals for the price of one!

Just by adopting a new way of thinking, many money saving ideas will come to mind. The new way of thinking is "How can I do this cheaper?"  Some ideas are: home hair-cuts, brown-bag lunches, and, generic medicine.

We pack lunches for the kids for school time.

Did you know that you can freeze lemons for cocktails? Next time you get a good deal, quarter them, and lay flat on a baking sheet in the freezer.  Once they're frozen hard, transfer them to a freezer ziplock. A few hours before your party (or cocktail hour!), set the number of lemons you need on the counter to thaw.  Enjoy!

I re-use my aluminum foil.

Organize a cookie swap or soup swap where you can prepare and exchange foods. It's like eating out without the extra expense! You can also freeze them and have them later.

Pick up your pizza, don't have your pizza delivered! You can save on both delivery fees and tip!
