Healthy Snacks for Big Eaters
Not having to deal with food pickiness is a relief for moms; you always know that you’re kids would be well-fed. But given the high rate of child obesity today, you may want to be extra careful of what your kids munch on. Eating big doesn’t always equate to eating right.
Snacks are a huge part of any kid’s diet. Most young children get almost half of their nutritional needs from snacks. Plus, eating snacks on its own improves metabolism and various body functions.
Here are some healthy snack options:
Does your child like potato chips and french fries? Well, who doesn’t? They’re easy to eat and go well with a video game and a television show. But chips and fries are often cooked in bad cholesterol-inducing oil. Potatoes are mostly starch that just increases blood sugar.
Consider this alternative instead: sticks of green veggies like cucumber, zucchini and celery, perhaps dipped in unsweetened yogurt. Same hand to mouth easy crunchiness, but with less the parental aggravation!
Every kid loves pancakes, especially if you make them into all sorts of shapes and sizes. But most commercial pancake mixes are filled with preservatives, flour and sugar – nothing that’s good for your child! Why not take a page off the SouthBeach diet recipe book and make pancakes from oatmeal instead?
Running oats through a food processor can give it the same consistency as commercial brands, and if you lace your cakes with honey, your kids won’t be able to tell the difference! Pancake is one of the most filling and satisfying snacks around. The recipe is rich in fiber which cleanses the body and improves digestion.
If you’ve been trying to wean your children from their fascination with fast food, then why not make some ‘fast food fare’ of your own? Burger patties can be a great place to hide vegetable your kids wouldn’t eat. For instance, why not add in some grated carrots or squash with your ground beef for that healthy snack?
Better yet, go veggie burger altogether! Banana heart has the same consistency as pork or beef but less the fat. Many alternative food stores also sell burger patties made from soy products --- a perfect protein source minus the bad cholesterol!
Kids can’t resist the combination of sweet and cold, especially after a long active playtime. But rather than using powdered juices, or serving commercial ice cream, why not create smoothies from whatever fruit happens to be in season. Smoothies can supply your child with his or her daily vitamin requirement.
It’s also an excellent way to get antioxidants in your child’s diet --- there are elements that boost your child’s immune system and protect them from diseases. They’re also protective against different kinds of cancer.
Teach you child early on to steer clear of soda, junk foods and sugary treats. Whip them up something healthy and hearty!
