Marathon Day Tips

  • Do not start too quickly
    • Starting a race too quickly can be disastrous for your overall performance
  • Start at the pace you can maintain all the way round
  • Don’t spend the first mile trying to weave your way through the crowd of runners in front of you
    • You use up a lot of energy trying to pick your way through
  • Don’t use brand new shoes
    • Make sure you run a few long runs in the shoes you plan to run in on race day
  • Don’t use brand new socks
  • Lubricate your feet if you usually get blisters
  • Run the tangents
    • Running the tangents will help you from running a longer distance
  • Don’t go to the first toilets you come to, unless you really need to
    • The toilets further along will be less crowded
  • Keep well hydrated
    • A small degree of hydration has a significant effect on performance
  • Drink often and little from the very start of the race
  • Drink Sports Water
    • Sports Water contains sodium and simple sugars that will provide you with a boost of energy
  • Draft off someone going your pace
    • This will help you conserve energy
  • Don’t drink or eat anything that you haven’t tried in training
  • Bring a throw-a-way clothes
    • A throwaway top will help you conserve energy until your body is warm
    • If the weather is cool, throwaway mittens will conserve energy spent on keeping your hands warm
  • Wear a lightweight racing hat
    • The racing hat will help prevent glare from the sun
  • Make sure you gently stretch all of your muscles
  • Use Sunscreen
