One element of a strength training workout program that far too many people leave out is the stretching component.  Then, amongst those who do make time to do the stretching, often they will ask themselves when is the best time to be doing so.

Not only do you have to dedicate the time to working on your flexibility regularly if you want to see improvements, but you must be sure that you’re performing it at a time of day when you’re likely to see best results.

Let’s have a quick look at what you need to know regarding when to perform your exercise stretches.

Muscles Must Be Warm
The very first must-know tip for stretching is that you absolutely must do it when the muscles are warm.  If you were to attempt to dive into your stretching training when the muscles are cold, you’re going to be placing yourself at a very high risk of suffering from a muscle sprain or tear.

If you’re nice and warm and there’s plenty of blood flowing to the muscle tissues then you’re going to be that much more limber and be able to execute your stretching to your best ability.

For this reason, stretching will work best when performed after the weight lifting is completed.

The Body Will Cool Down 
The next thing that you should keep in mind with regards to when to perform your stretching is that your body will start to cool down when you’re doing your stretching.  This is a big reason why it’s never a wise idea to do your stretching before you enter into your weight training exercises.  If you do so, you’re going to be cold moving onwards and that will decrease the level of strength you’re able to put forth. This also makes for another reason why stretching at the very end of your workout is a good idea.  By doing the stretching at this point it provides a nice end to the workout session.

Everyday Effort Is Best
Finally, the last thing that you must remember as you go about your stretching program is that an everyday effort will be best.  Increasing your flexibility is something that you will have to work hard at and cannot be done sporadically.

If you want to see the best possible success from your efforts, try and spend at least 10 minutes a day devoted to stretching activities.  Even if this means doing a gentle warm-up and then stretch on your off days while you watch TV, so be it.

The more often you can work on stretching, the more flexible you’re going to become.
