These days, staying healthy should be on top of our priorities. While we cannot check every surface for germs and infectious bacteria, there are certain things we can do to strengthen our immune system so it can efficiently fight off diseases. Here are a few healthy habits to help you avoid getting sick and improve your overall well-being. 

Eat healthy

Eating a well-balanced diet will supply your body with the essential nutrients needed for growth and repair. It will also give you the energy to get through your day, help ward off various diseases, and improve your brain function. Make it a point to eat a diet rich in protein, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and avoid unprocessed foods and drinks. 

Stay hydrated

Our bodies heavily rely on water to survive. Health experts usually recommend drinking six to eight glasses of water per day. However, every person is different, and what may be enough for you may be insufficient for others. For instance, if you live in a hot or humid environment, you need to drink more to prevent dehydration. Strive to drink at least a minimum of eight glasses a day but make sure to drink more whenever you feel thirsty. 

Wash your hands

Frequent hand washing is another habit that will keep you healthy. Washing your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds can help remove germs and prevent them from spreading. Make sure to wash:

  • Before and after eating
  • When preparing food
  • After taking out the trash
  • After using the bathroom
  • After sneezing or blowing your nose
  • After touching objects used by a sick person

Even if your hands are not dirty, make it a habit to wash them regularly. If there is no soap and water available, you can use an alcohol-based sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

Get enough sleep

Lack of sleep can lead to serious health complications such as heart attack, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and obesity. It can also negatively influence your emotional and mental state. To boost your immune system, it is important that you get the necessary hours of sleep every night. Study shows that poor sleep enhances our susceptibility to the common cold. To help you get better sleep, make sure that your bedroom is conducive for rest and remove any distractions. 

Exercise regularly

Staying active is another effective way to help strengthen your immune system. Aside from boosting your immune functioning, regular exercise can:

  • Lessen the risk of a heart attack
  • Build stronger bones
  • Lower your cholesterol level and blood pressure
  • Lower the risk of diabetes
  • Help you manage your weight
  • Help with depression

Strive to get at least a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every day. Whether it’s walking your dog in the park, jogging around the neighborhood, hiking with your friends, or doing yoga with your loved ones, make sure that you incorporate any form of physical activity into your daily routine.

Spend time outdoors

Spending time outdoors will boost your immune system and can do wonders for your mental health. Spending time with nature can help us feel connected in the present moment and prevent us from getting overstimulated. In addition, your body produces more vitamin D whenever you are exposed to sunlight so try to get outdoors as much as you can, even for a few minutes every day. 

Clean your home

Your home should be a safe and healthy haven for you and your family. It is imperative that you regularly clean and sanitize your home to prevent the build-up of dust, germs, allergens, pests, and bacteria. Cleaning your home can also prevent mold growth, improve your sleep, increase your productivity, reduce stress, and enhance your mood. Make it a point to clean your home frequently from top to bottom. To lessen the workload, create a cleaning schedule and share the tasks with your entire household. 

Minimize alcohol consumption

When done moderately, drinking alcohol can be healthy. However, binge or heavy drinking can negatively impact your immune system. Try to reduce your alcohol intake. If you can measure and count your drinks, do so. When drinking, pace yourself and space them out. If you cannot cut it down, consider getting professional help as you may have already developed a drinking disorder. 

Consult your doctor

Regular check-ups with your physician can help you spot potential health issues before they arise or become a serious problem. Your doctor can detect any health conditions early on, giving you a higher chance of resolving them right away. Make sure to be present at all your appointments and take all your prescribed medications. Also, you should have a ready stock of medicines at home to treat basic fever symptoms.
