Although it might sound obvious, it’s really important to look after yourself when you are pregnant. But, there is so much information given to you whilst pregnant that all the advice can be daunting – don’t do this, make sure to do that, do this every day – and soon can get really overwhelming! The important thing is to make sure that both you and your baby are healthy and happy, so looking after yourself is highly recommended. 

Your midwife will be a great source of information during your pregnancy and is sure to have plenty of reassurance and support to help you every step of the way during your pregnancy, so keeping up with your appointments and staying in touch will help you to build a relationship with them! 

Whilst your midwife is on hand to provide support and advice, looking after your health is largely down to you during your pregnancy. With that in mind, here are 5 ways to look after your health as a mum-to-be. 

Pain Management 

When you are pregnant, it’s understandable to be a little apprehensive about taking painkillers and medication for pain management. Some common medicines aren’t recommended for pregnant women, such as ibuprofen, so it is always advisable to check with your midwife and doctor. If you were taking medication prior to your pregnancy, then you should schedule a visit with your doctor to discuss whether or not it is ok to continue taking the medication. 

When it comes to pain relief and management, there are some alternative remedies that you can try if you’re not keen on taking pain killers. For things such as headaches, then you could try a cooling wheat eye pillow which you pop in the freezer and lay over your eyes whilst laying down. For backache, a hot water bottle can help to reduce pain and inflammation. Try to avoid taking natural medications and pain killers, as some can contain ingredients that aren’t recommended for pregnant women, or have been known to bring on early labour. Always get advice from your doctor and midwife before taking any medication during your pregnancy. 

Keep Up With Appointments

When you are pregnant, it is so important that you not only keep up with your midwife appointments but other regular appointments that might pop up from time to time, too. Your doctor may want to schedule more frequent checkups if you have any historic or underlying health conditions that could be influenced by pregnancy, so let them know if and when you can make it.

It’s also important to attend optician and dentist appointments if they are due during your pregnancy. Some pregnant women report changes in their eyesight or teeth and gum health whilst pregnant due to fluctuations in their hormone levels, so if you notice any changes, its best to get them checked and discuss this with your optician or dentist Warrington-based. 

Take A Seat

If you’re always the one rushing around after everyone else, whether it be taking your children to school or making sure everyone is taken care of, then it’s important that you are also being looked after during your pregnancy! Doing day to day things, such as shopping or commuting, can be tough, especially if it’s warm, and wandering around shops or standing up for long periods of time can put pressure on your joints, as well as making you feel especially tired. Try to avoid lifting anything heavy whilst shopping, such as potatoes and heavy bottles, and try to minimise any risk of injury to yourself and your baby by bending your knees whilst picking things up. 

Accept Help 

When you’re pregnant, everything suddenly feels different and all the more intense, no matter what it is! If you’re feeling overwhelmed or tired, then it’s ok to accept help to help ease the pressure on you. Even something as simple as getting help whilst preparing tea or someone doing the school run a few times a week can help take the pressure off and give you a chance to take a break and relax. Eat Well 

This of course depends on you and your pregnancy – everyone is different when it comes to cravings and aversions! Try to eat as healthily as you can and drink plenty of water so that you are keeping yourself and your baby as healthy and hydrated as possible. There are some myths surrounding pregnancy and eating, such as the whole “eating for two” idea. Whilst you may feel more hungry than usual, you don’t need to eat much more than you usually would – try to eat a healthy and balanced diet instead, so that you are getting plenty of vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre. 

Ensure your diet is full of fruits and vegetables and try to incorporate carbohydrates as these are a great source of energy and help you to feel full, without being high in calories. Protein is also important, with foods such as beans, fish, eggs, meat and nuts great sources of protein during your pregnancy, but always make sure that any meat is cooked thoroughly and is hot all the way through. Dairy products are also important, as they contain calcium which help your bab to grow.
