body lift

A body lift is a complex type of surgery that is suitable for those who have lots of loose, saggy skin all over their bodies. A body lift, also known as a belt lipectomy or a lower body lift, is a combination of a tummy tuck, as well as an outer thigh and buttock lift and is beneficial for tightening the skin and giving the patient a more youthful look.

Recovery time

Having a body lift means that you will require a significant amount of time to recover and heal properly. A body lift is an extensive surgery and is performed in a hospital under general anesthesia. Typically it will take anywhere from 4 to 7 hours to complete. A patient who undergoes a body lift can expect to stay in the hospital for anywhere from 1 to 4 nights, depending on whether or not there were any complications with the surgery. There will be a moderate amount of pain and discomfort after waking up after surgery. Immediately following the surgery the patient will be administered pain medications by way of intravenous or intramuscular forms of medication and then later they will be given pain medication orally. Most patients will need to remain on pain medication for a period of 5 to 10 days on average. The surgeon will design a very specific dietary plan for after the surgery that the patient would be well advised to follow. The surgeon will also give the patient a list of instructions to follow once they leave the hospital and go home. These instructions need to be followed very closely as they can help to lessen the risk that complications from the surgery will arise.

Swelling

Swelling will occur as a result of the surgery but the patient should see an improvement anywhere from two to six weeks time. If no improvement is noted in that length of time then a visit to the surgeon should be scheduled. Bruising is not a common consequence of body lift surgery but patients who tend to bruise easily might see a few bruises on their skin. The bandages on the skin can be taken off between 1 to 7 days after surgery and the stitches are absorbed and should cause no problem to the patient whatsoever.

Extra help

A patient of body lift surgery will need someone to help care for them for up to a period of two weeks because drainage tubes will be inserted into the areas where surgery was performed. The surgeon may give the patient a medical compression garment to wear at all times except when the patient needs to bathe. It is essential to continue to wear the compression garment 24 hours a day until the doctor says it no longer needs to be worn. Generally speaking the dressings from the surgery will be taken off 2 days after the surgery has been done and at that time the patient can begin to shower again.
