body acne

Body acne is a familiar problem for many of us. It is rarely as intense or as readily apparent as facial acne, but it still makes our lives a little less pleasant. Here are some tips to help you handle it easily and painlessly.

Keeping Clean

Shower regularly to keep acne-causing bacteria from building up on your skin. Try to use slightly cooler water, if you like hot showers, and do not shower too often, because over washing can dry your skin, which triggers the sebaceous glands and causes your skin to produce too much oil. The resulting oil can lead to breakouts.

Once a week or so, use a loofah with an exfoliating body scrub to exfoliate your body. Again, don’t do this too often, since it will irritate your skin if you do, but when you exfoliate do so thoroughly. Use a body moisturizer after the shower to lock in that fresh feeling and control oiliness.

Treat Your Skin

Try to find a lotion specially formulated to treat body acne. It should include alpha hydroxyl acids to help your skin shed dead cells more quickly and freely, as well as an acne-fighting ingredient such as salicylic acid. Commit to this and use it daily. At the beginning of this course of treatment you might have a sudden, dramatic breakout; this is because the acne fighting ingredients in the lotion actually cause your skin to regenerate faster, so previously invisible acne pimples will rise to the surface before your skin settles down.

Don’t Pop Your Pimples

It’s tempting, but if you pop your pimples you are breaking the skin, which creates a risk for infection and scarring, and if you don’t fully clean the area afterwards it can lead to inflammation or more breakouts, as the bacteria inside the pimple are released onto the skin surface. It’s easier and less risky to just leave them alone. When they’re ready, they’ll drain by themselves, most likely in the shower when you are safely in the process of washing up anyway.

Be Patient

It can take up to eight weeks for your skin to regenerate fully. Any course of treatment will take at least one skin cycle to clearly show results, so don’t give up too soon. Be patient, stick to it, and just check how you’re doing every couple of weeks. It takes some time but eventually your body acne should fade away like a distant memory.
