Physical and mental health is essential, and many people tend to ignore them until there are signs that they can’t ignore anymore. Unfortunately, there are about one in three adults (30.7%) in the U.S. that are overweight. Many factors play into staying fit and healthy. It takes some effort on your part to take care of your health, however, you can decrease your risk of stroke, heart disease, injury, and some forms of cancer. There are a number of steps you can take to find your way to better health.

Better Nutrition

Making better food choices is often the most challenging part for people. It has been proven that what we consume is closely related to health. When we make consistently bad food choices, our health is going to suffer. However, when we have more balanced nutrition, we find many benefits. Making healthier food choices can help prevent certain conditions. This includes reducing the risk of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. You can also lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and lose weight when making better food choices.

Regular Exercise

In general, regular and consistent exercise is good for our bodies and our minds. It can help reduce high blood pressure, improve depression, and treat osteoporosis. There were about 91 million adults in 2015 that reported having some form of arthritis. Regular exercise helps to prevent diabetes, colon cancer, stroke, and heart disease. Those who exercise find that they have fewer injuries and are better able to control their weight. Being active helps improve overall well-being and mental health. Everyone should try to be active for 30 to 60 minutes at least five times per week. Any amount of movement is better than not moving.

Reduce Stress

Stress has a negative impact on your overall health, but many people do not manage it well. While some amount of stress is good, and we all deal with it every day, when it becomes too much, that is when you need to have better control of it. It would be best if you considered self-care such as relaxation, meditation, and massage. In 2021, 63% of those that got a massage did so for health and wellness reasons. When you are feeling overwhelming stress, get up, take a walk, and practice some breathing exercises.

Lose Weight

If you are overweight, you might consider losing some weight. When you carry too much weight, it negatively impacts your joints, knees, hips, and spine. In addition, when you are overweight, you could have pockets of fat around your organs which makes it difficult for them to function properly. You are also at risk for conditions such as gallbladder disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, some cancers, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

Provide Protection For Your Skin

When people focus on their health and improving it, they do not often think about their skin. However, your skin is an essential part of your overall health. Too much sun exposure can lead to skin cancer. It is one of the most common types of cancer. You should limit the amount of time you spend in the sun. When you are in the sun, wear a hat and protective clothing. You should wear sunscreen all year long on your hands and face. You want your sunscreen to be a broad-spectrum protectant that blocks UVA and UVB rays. This will protect your skin. It would be best if you stayed away from tanning booths.

There are many factors including improving your overall health. These are just a few steps you should take to a healthier version of yourself. It requires active work every day; however, the benefits far exceed the amount of work you have to put in.
